I have exactly 9 days until surgery and I'm not gonna lie...I'm pretty freaked out. I was planning to write something about the way I'm feeling but decided that writing about it meant dwelling on it and these are feelings on which I do not wish to dwell.
I decided to dedicate this post to my amazing sister-in-law and breast cancer previvor Andrea Downing. Angelina Jolie told her preventative mastectomy story to the New York Times, but Andrea shared hers much more eloquently on her amazing blog. She is a talented writer, a passionate and informed activist, and a brave storyteller.
When my mind shifts to my upcoming heart surgery and I start feeling afraid, I think of Andrea who underwent a double mastectomy and reconstruction just a few months ago. Her bravery helps me feel brave. Seeing her flourish now makes me hopeful to come out on the other side of my operation feeling inspired, refreshed and renewed like she does after hers.
